Forced prostitution continues to be a serious problem in Argentina: young women disappear every day, search notices can be seen on almost every street corner in the cities. Women trafficking remains part of Argentina’s everyday-life.
Already in 1867, the first Polish women, "Polacas", traveled to South America in the hope of a better future. For them, it was often a matter of pure survival. In the following years, ten thousands of women came to Argentina through Polish women traders. On their long journey the women were often accommodated in the elegant Hotel Kummer (engl.: HOTEL SORROW) in Vienna, where the dream of a better life was still tangible. Upon arrival in the New World, their papers were finally taken from them, and detracted from their identity, they were put into brothels. Higher prices could be charged for their light skin. Buenos Aires, the prosperous port and immigration city, became the main hub for the women trafficking in South America during the turn of the century. The term "Polaca" is used synonymously for prostitute in many parts of Argentina until this day.
The history of the "Polacas" continues in the present - actions, causes and (non)-appearances occur in a never-ending repetition, even though they remain an unseen shadowy existence.
HOTEL SORROW turns places into protagonists and narrators of this (hi)story, so that a narrative of the past as well as of the present can be told. The search for traces in Buenos Aires (ARG) and Lodz (POL) documents those places of remembrance. Traces that show what was and what is. They are absent and present at the same time.
HOTEL SORROW was supported by the Hessische Filmförderung, the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Culture and Media (BKM) and Stiftung Zurückgeben.

"This is no way how to make a film, even a small film, I mean, to make one like this - it's impossible," sagt Terry Gilliam im Dokumentarfilm "Lost in La Mancha" (2002), der die Dreharbeiten zu seinem nie fertiggestellten Film "Don Quixote" begleitet.
Reisemobil-Stellplatz / 1230 Wien eröffnet mit einer Split-Screen-Sequenz: Zwei Männer und zwei Frauen finden sich auf einem fahrenden Boot wieder. Sie sind durch ihre Kostüme miteinander verknotet und versuchen, sich aus dieser Situation zu befreien. Nach wenigen Minuten kommt es zu einem formalen und inhaltlichen Bruch: Einem Schauspieler ist übel geworden, der Dreh muss abgebrochen werden. Ab hier setzt der dokumentarische Modus des restlichen Filmes ein.
Es sind die Dreharbeiten für einen Kunstfilm, auf einem Stellplatz in einem Wiener Aussenbezirk. Einen Green-Screen, eingeklemmt zwischen Wohnwägen und Catering-Tisch, ersetzt das Boot auf der Donau, wo die vier Akteure sich zu entknoten versuchen.
Die Notlösung wird zum Zustand. Die Augustsonne brennt. Technische Probleme, unzufriedene SchauspielerInnen, die wenig stringente Kommunikation und der unerbittliche Optimismus seitens der Regie, bringen die angespannte Stimmung am Set weiter zum aufkochen. Es kommt zu Missverständnissen, Streit und Schuldzuweisungen zwischen den Beteiligten - vor und hinter der Kamera. Die Aussichten, den Film je fertig zu stellen, schwinden.
Der Film zeigt eine Substanz, die jedem Arbeitsprozess innewohnt: Das Potenzial des Scheiterns

By focusing on immediate profit and ignoring millennia of experience in agronomy, agroindustry is responsible for the unprecedented erosion of soils now occurring around the world. Add climate change and dwindling natural resources to the picture, and it would appear that even societies in the Global North are no longer safe from famines. Voices of Transition is a film which is optimistic but clear-sighted. It makes clear that these current and impending crises are, in fact, positive challenges!

For 15-year old Pauline, 10-year old Richard and 6-year old Lenni, life means something very special. They suffer from leukemia and they are facing death. Pauline writes poems, Richard knows everything about his disease and Lenni's charm fills any room. Three strong young people with all their plans, hopes, triumphs and defeats. An unsusual cinematic approach to a situation that is not all about the disease but instead the search for life's energy and power.
